Medical Scholars: Introducing an immersion program about healthcare as relentless as you are!

The Program

The Firespark! Medical Scholars Program is designed to introduce the many opportunities available to you in the medical field.  Can you imagine the opportunity to participate in cadaver dissection and use the Visible Human Project?  Firespark! students have, and you can too.

This program is offered from July 12 to July 25, 2009 at Brenau University and features field trips to a variety of medical facilities in the region.  You need not be “great” to participate, but you should be willing to work hard and try different things.

Firespark! Medical Scholars of 2009 will be the first to participate in our newly designed, three specialized programs:

  • Crime Scene Investigation-Using cases, you will sleuth like a disease detective.  You will lean about how gun shots enter and exit the body; see cadavers; and look at diseases through a microscope.
  • Veterinary Medicine- Students will tour the prestigious School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia, watch live surgery, practice their suture techniques on avian patients and learn about zoonotic diseases.
  • Try Healthalon- Can’t decide between becoming a doctor or working in other aspects of the health field, try this program on for size.  Students will explore a myriad of health professions, the types of patients they see, and explore various roles of health professions.

As a Firespark! Medical Scholar, you’ll spend your days interacting with a variety of specialists, patients, and university faculty on field trips to medical facilities, and working with medical professionals to make sense both what you’ve learned, and how to navigate your career in the healing arts.  You’ll learn about cancer, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, addiction and a range of brain disorders from cerebral palsy to autism. You’ll gain insight into the lives of patients:  the compassion involved with helping them heal physically, emotionally and spiritually.  There will be time for fun and exploring the artistic side of medicine during the Medical Scholars Program.  It is almost like being a university student!  You can read more about the tentative schedule on the internet at www.firespark.org.

The Students & Faculty

More than two hundred students in a variety of disciplines are selected for the Firespark! programs each summer.  The 35 young men and women in the Medical Scholars program range in age from 15-17 and come from all over the world.  During the two weeks, participants in the Firespark! School for Gifted Students in Fine Arts and Communications will be on campus, too.  You’ll have the opportunity to interact with students in other disciplines and attend entertainment programs as a group in the evenings.

Students who have attended Firespark! programs before are called “Survivors”.  It isn’t about surviving the program.  It is all about surviving the other 50 weeks without the stimulation, intensity and friends you make during Firespark!

The strength of Firespark! continues to be the quality of the faculty. Your Firespark! Medical Scholars program will be led by Dr. Gale Starich and Dr. Louise Bauck and assisted by a number of practicing medical professionals, all who prepare college students for careers in medicine.

The Activities

As a Medical Scholars participant, you will explore medical careers by examining specific disease processes through the eyes of working medical professionals, patients, scientists and diagnostic tools. You’ll get to see cadavers and go behind the scenes at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta (CDC).  “The Medical Scholars program has many amazing opportunities for both human and animal medicine enthusiasts, including clinical aptitude testing, basic examination skills, forensics labs, guest visits from medical professionals, hospital tours, diagnostic laboratory skills, and applied anatomy exercises. Lots of fun and no tests!”  There will be an opportunity for self-exploration about how your personality affects your career choices coupled with an examination of the myriad of medical career opportunities now open to students.  Weave all this with the fun activities offered by Firespark! and you have an idea about the personal and professional growth you can attain in just two weeks.

"I always thought I wanted to be a doctor.  Now I am going to become one.  The faculty at Firespark! in the Medical Scholars program was amazing.  There knowledge and encouragement has developed a new passion for medicine in me that I didn't know was in me.  I'll miss Firespark!, but I look forward to starting college and making my way toward my dream. You might want to hear what Firespark! is like from one of our survivors and we would love for you hear it also.  If you are interested in the survivor experience we can connect you with a student who has the same interests you do and let them tell you about the program.

If your interested in talking with a survivor please use our email form and indicate in your message that you would like this opportunity.  We will coordinate the details and get you connected.

Please include your evening contact information since many of our survivors are busy during the day with school and other activities.
